Confidence is a strange and fleeting quality to have. Some days you might be flying high, feeling great and strutting your stuff, the next you might be weeping into a bowl of ice cream and wishing that you looked like an Instagram filter had already been applied. (We’ve all been there!)
The thing is, that though we all have our ups and downs, there are a few ways to help build your confidence that can work wherever you are and however you are feeling. The key is to catch yourself before you start spiraling.
Here’s what you can do.
Smile in the Mirror
It sounds crazy but you would be amazed at what this can do for your self-confidence. You’ve heard that smiling is contagious and smiling at yourself in the mirror is a kind of fast track to that phenomena. Seeing yourself smiling, even if you are faking it, will automatically make you want to smile back.
Dress Up For Yourself
When you are feeling down about your body, it is always tempting to curl up in your PJs but instead, you should dress up for yourself. Instead of wearing something schlumpy, put on your best dress, find your favorite shoes and do your hair. Rather than focusing on what is making you unhappy, dressing up will show you just how amazing you can look. And if Sarah Jessica Parker could wear that crazy huge flower on a regular day, so can you!

Strike a Power Pose
Amy Cuddy is the real authority on power posing and in her TED talk, she explains that striking a strong, bold pose can really help to build your confidence. But she is really the best one to explain her theory:
Compliment Yourself – But do it Properly
Complimenting yourself is hard and it is all too easy to be general and generic when you do think about what you like about yourself. Compliment yourself on your best qualities by remembering good things you’ve done. For example, ‘I’m doing great at work’ is a good compliment to give yourself but you can also go the extra mile by adding, ‘because I have been really productive this week.’
Do the Things that Make You Happy
As well as affirming the great qualities you have, you should also make sure that you do the things that make you happy. When you are at your happiest, you are also likely to be at your most confident because you feel fulfilled in what you are doing. Finding fulfillment means something different to everyone and though you might not feel fulfilled all the time, the more you can do to try and achieve it, the better you will feel about yourself. I love hiking and working out!
