Unfortunately, we are all subjected to the aging process. Whilst many teenagers and those in their twenties live in ignorant bliss. There comes a time when everyone realizes their skin is not always going to look as radiant as they had hoped. This tends to coincide with the realization that they can’t get away with eating whatever they want and not putting on weight.
This is one of the many sad truths of getting older.
That said, we can always adapt and start taking better care of ourselves in order to maintain a youthful glow. The truth is that whilst many beauty companies thrive on the insecurity people tend to feel about their skin, body, and personal appearance: marketing miracle cures as the answer to all your problems. In reality, it’s often a lot more about looking after yourself from the inside out rather than spending a fortune on a “miracle cream” where the main ingredient is clever marketing!
In reality, most of the lotions and potions we put on our skin tend to be superficial quick fixes that can often make us feel better. Sometimes it does have a temporarily visible effect, but they don’t tend to provide sustainable benefits. They aren’t able to penetrate your skin to the level that would be required to truly change your skin. It would need a pharmaceutical license to do that.
Instead, what most cosmetic products do is moisturize and plump up the first two layers of your skin. Which if you remember anything from biology class, you will know are dead skill cells!
If you really want better skin, then the answer is more likely to be found in nature and subtle lifestyle changes more so than in the back of a fashion or beauty magazine. Indeed, nature seems to provide us with all the ingredients necessary to take care of ourselves. For instance, the plant aloe vera that is incredible for skin will nourish your skin with a plethora of essential nutrients down to the deepest layer (dermis layer). This means it is having an effect on living skin cells rather than just pumping out the first two dead layers.
Whilst many people are aware of the topical applications for a plant such as an aloe vera, it’s just as wise to drink the inner leaf juice. Your skin is an outer reflection of your inner state of health; almost like a mirror. Just like how iridologists can look at your eyes and nutritionists can look at your tongue in order to work out what’s going on inside your body. The skin is a great window to gaze into too.
Here are some tips to help you keep your skin looking young:
GET MORE SLEEP
Experts recommend we get between six and nine hours of sleep each night, though many of us due to busy lifestyles are getting much less than this.
If you feel stressed and struggle to drift off to sleep then you might want to consider hypnotherapy as an option. Perhaps a guided relaxation video on YouTube, that can help you drift off into a deep. The thing with sleep is that it allows your brain frequency to slow down. In this process, it goes into a self-recovery mode where it starts to repair and replenish the body, like a pitstop in formula one racing.
The visible effects of increased sleep can take a few weeks to show, as with most things our bodies are often in a state of catch up. However, nothing is more helpful than getting enough sleep to ensure the reduction of tired puffy eyes and more vibrant looking skin. Indeed, you’ll notice that many people who don’t get enough sleep have a tendency to look a bit gray within their complexion, which instantly ages people.
NURTURE YOUR SKIN
Most of us know the importance of moisturizing our skin on a daily basis, but it’s not just what we put on our bodies that counts. It’s what we put in our bodies too. In fact, as mentioned above, many times we are putting lotions on our body that aren’t able to be absorbed. You might want to consider moisturizing with an organic product that can be absorbed by the body, like aloe vera; which has something called aloin in it, this is absorbed by the skin like a sponge. Basically what the aloe vera does is, it is transported down to the dermis layer of the skin, bringing with it, a variety of amino acids and minerals that are fantastic for the skin.
Another thing you might want to try is a natural clay face mask, in order to draw out impurities from the skin. If you’re looking to have tighter skin, then simply whisking an egg white and putting that on your face will do the job of an expensive tightening face mask. The ingredient in these products is albumen which comes from an egg.
The point is when it comes to nourishing your skin, you don’t need to buy really expensive creams and potions. Nature has already provided some great options, for instance, cucumber to reduce puffiness of the eyes.
NOURISH YOUR SKIN FROM THE INSIDE OUT
As mentioned above, our skin is an external representation of what’s going on inside out bodies. For instance, if you are getting acne or psoriasis this is due to what’s going on inside your body. Treating the condition topically isn’t going to get to the root cause and resolve the issue.
Acne is often triggered by a hormone imbalance, whereas psoriasis is an immune system issue that is exacerbated by stress and anxiety. Therefore, whilst topical lotions can help relieve some of the symptoms, it’s only when you start addressing things internally (e.g. building a stronger immune system) that you will notice these conditions fade.
DRINK PLENTY OF WATER
If you’re asking yourself the question why has my skin gone dry? Then, the first place to look is at how much water you are drinking. See, water is essential for the healthy function of all our organs, including our skin, and when you are dehydrated it shows on the skin like a mirror – in fact, if you suffer from dark circles around your eyes, this is often due to a lack of dehydration just as much as it is a lack of sleep.
You don’t need to drink just water, to hydrate, but if you think coffee, tea or fizzy drinks such as coca cola add to your daily intake of water, you would be wrong, as they all contain caffeine which dehydrates rather than hydrates you. Therefore, if the recommended water intake is eight glasses of water a day, for each cup of coffee or soft drink you consume, you need to consume an additional glass of water to compensate for the dehydrating effect.
The sun, whilst wonderful in its ability to give us a golden glow that certainly does make our skin look better. Even in the winter, provides us with Vitamin D which is essential to healthy skin – is not always your friend. UVA and UVB rays cause skin damage, and even if we ignore the skin cancer aspect for a moment, these rays cause the skin to age much more rapidly than it otherwise would. You’ll have seen people that spend a lot of time tanning themselves with leathery skin, which is the effect of too much exposure to the sun tends to have on people.
