Hello hello! I am back from New York and I’m so excited to tell you everything about my first-ever, completely solo, weekend trip! This was the perfect staycation in NYC and Lord & Moris was kind enough to have me! New York’s finest budget hotel in Times Square.
Many of you know this by now, but, I love New York City. Everything about it – from the culture to the public transportation, I really adore just about everything except maybe the cold weather, haha. For my weekend trip, I stayed at The Red Collection® ‘s Lord & Moris Times Square Hotel. Situated right on 8th Avenue and 39th Street, it was the perfect location for tourists or even a staycation in the city.
While I’ve been to New York quite a few times, this time I took the subway and train throughout my whole stay! I typically Uber or Lyft from John F. Kennedy airport into the city, but since I wanted to be a local, I took public transportation instead and I’m so glad I did!
If you’ve never taken public transportation into the city, but are interested, here’s how to:
- Once you’ve arrived at JFK Airport, look for ‘AirTrain’.
- Head towards AirTrain and once you’re there you will see there are three! One ONLY goes to all the terminals – I made this mistake and hopped onto the first AirTrain I saw. I ended up going in a circle for a good half an hour. There’s another AirTrain that goes to Howard, and one that goes to Jamaica. Take the Jamaica one if you’re going into the city.
- When you get off of the AirTrain at Jamaica, you will then need to purchase an AirTrain Metrocard ($7.75). In addition, you will also need to purchase the fare for the Long Island Railroad (LIRR). Those are two separate tickets you need! At first, I only purchased the LIRR ticket and was so confused why the machine was not accepting my ticket, haha.
- From the Long Island Railroad, you head to Penn Station! From Penn Station, it was only a 6-minute walk to Lord & Moris. SO CONVENIENT, especially since I was carrying all of my stuff with me solo!
Budget Hotel in Great Location: Lord & Moris
Lord & Moris is part of The Red Collection®, which is a hyper-local soft brand of Red Roof. The unique budget hotel offers free WiFi, a business center, and a 24-hour front desk staff. I love the rooms and how colorful it was. Each of their room comes with a flat-screen TV, and hairdryer.
My room was literally perfect for me! The bathroom was so nice and I love how the shower head was a rain type. Since I was traveling by myself, the room was so big and spacious! I love being able to sleep diagonally on the king-size bed. Who doesn’t?
When you go downstairs to this boutique hotel, there’s always someone at the front desk. They were super helpful and informative. In the lobby, they offer cold and hot water. If you’re in need of refilling your water bottle, you can always head downstairs. During the morning, they also have hot coffee as well! The business center is located right in front of the entrance of the boutique hotel. Since the weather was pretty chilly (it was around 40 degrees Fahrenheit), I didn’t really use it. However, I did see some people enjoying their lunch out there!
The Red Collection Experience
During my trip, The Red Collection® sent me a box to help fulfill The Red Collection Experience a bit better, which was so nice of them! In my box, I received a portable charger (which was SO USEFUL during my stay), water bottle, Erin Condren notebook, Lulu candle, and Verve bath salts.
Lord & Moris is the perfect budget hotel in New York City. If you’re looking for an inexpensive, yet luxurious hotel in Times Square, I definitely recommend them.
Places To Eat and Visit
There are so many places to visit in New York! Because I was only staying in NYC for the weekend, I wanted to do as much as I could within 48 hours! I landed in NYC from Arizona around 7 am. Since check-in was not until 3 pm, I had a lot of time to kill. Lord & Moris does store bags for you before checking in and after you check out, but up to 9 pm on the day you check out.
Some of the places I went to eat and drink at were Non Solo Piada, Artichoke Pizza (my favorite pizza place in NYC), Paper Coffee, Angelina’s Bakery, Los Tacos No. 1, Variety Coffee, Gregory’s Coffee, and Jollibee.
On my first day, I went to visit The High Line and Museum of Sex.
On my second day, I went to visit Greenwich Village, Meatpacking District, Staten Island Ferry, and Bryant Park. I heard Bryant Park recently opened their ice skating rink, but by the time I got to the park, it was already closed for the day so it was too late.
Staten Island Ferry
Funny story, when I took the Staten Island Ferry, I honestly thought I was going to see the Statue of Liberty. I noticed that we were not even going relatively close to the Statue of Liberty, haha. When we finally docked, I was so lost and confused. I ended up not really exploring Staten Island because I’m not sure what to do since I didn’t plan it accordingly.
On my last day of the trip, I visited my favorite museum: Museum of Mathematics (MoMath). Back in March, I did an interview with the Executive Director of MoMath, Cindy Lawerence.
That was my whole weekend trip to New York City. I had such an amazing time in the city and traveling by myself. Originally, I was really scared and was so anxious the day prior to departure. Nonetheless, it was one of the best trips I’ve ever taken!
