I thought a lot about how I wanted to address this, but I keep finding myself in a rabbit hole and ended up deleting everything I’ve written. I try to keep current events and politics off my blog – not because I don’t care, but because I feel like it’s not black or white, yes or no, right or wrong, etc. This is why I’m partnering with Feel Good Voting to help spread more awareness for their campaign.
Encouraging Young People to Vote!
Feel Good Voting is a non-profit media initiative to motivate young people to register and vote in the 2020 election. The initiative uses social media influencers to create content that inspires 18 to 30-year-olds to register and VOTE. Also, I love how Feel Good Voting is a non-partisan Get-Out-The-Vote initiative that does not endorse any candidate.
Did you know that 100 million people did not vote in 2016?
I’ll be honest, I didn’t vote in previous elections. This was because I wasn’t educated enough to make an informed decision. This past year has been eye-opening and I’ve been educating myself on a lot of political issues. For once, I feel like I know what’s going on! Haha.
I encourage you all to be informed. Go beyond social media, news outlets, and friends/family. Learn to understand the difference between politics, rhetoric, and policy. Don’t succumb to groupthink or peer pressure. There is NOTHING wrong with saying, “I don’t know enough about this issue to make a decision right now”.
If that’s the case, then take the time to learn about various topics because voting is the central tenet of our great democracy!
What Percentage of Young People Vote?
The US Census Bureau published an analysis of young-adult voting. To summarize, America’s youngest voters have decreased over time. The voting rates dropped from 50.9 percent in 1964 to 38.0 percent in 2012.
How to Register to Vote?
You can check to see if you’re registered to vote by going to Feel Good Voting. Simply click on “Check Your Registration” to see your status! You can also register to vote if you’re not already. It takes less than 2 minutes and it’s super easy. The website contains a lot of useful information and makes voting a seamless process.
How to Educate Yourself on Politics?
In all honestly, this is a very difficult question to discuss. Reading is one way to be informed. Read about policies and statistics. News media outlets may be a great starting point; however, most of them are heavily biased. Nonetheless, read and listen to others, but don’t be influenced by them!
