Can You Introduce Yourselves?
Dr. Aaron Potts: My name is Dr. Aaron Potts. I’m a naturopathic physician. I did my training in Portland, Oregon and then ended up having a family practice residency in Salt Lake City. After that, I continued training in regenerative injection therapy, and I’ve been doing that for the past few years.
Harry Obsitos: My name is Harry Obsitos. I am the co-owner and CEO of Nascent Health, and I’ve been in the regenerative space now for a little over two years. We have a sister company that has specialized in human umbilical tissue and regenerative therapy. Nascent Health is our newest company.
What Services Does Nascent Health Offer and How Does it Differ from the Traditional Med Spa?
Harry Obsitos: Great question. The vision and idea behind Nascent Health is regenerative first. With traditional med spas, you’re talking about Botox and fillers – a lot of cosmetic changes, whereas we focus on the regenerative first. We’re more interested in getting the body better. Once we get the body better using natural products, we can focus on the aesthetics and rejuvenation.
What Made You Want to Open Up a Regenerative Clinic?
Harry Obsitos: I think the idea behind what interests me about regenerative medicine is that it is completely different from traditional Western medicine. My wife is a registered nurse, and my son has special needs – he has Williams Syndrome. This has really shifted our focus away from hard drugs and prescription medications for a more natural path. The more we researched years ago, the more we looked into this space, the more we saw the benefits of taking a more naturopathic approach.
One thing led to another, and I met a couple of key people in my life that pushed me in this direction. We opened up a regenerative therapy company about two years ago. We’ve been working in this space ever since, and we’ve seen firsthand the amazing results of how regenerative therapy has helped by not including addictive drugs, not using invasive therapies. One of the big things for a lot of our clients, too, is not having that downtime, because it’s non-invasive people being able to get better, get out of pain and do it in a timely fashion where they can continue to live their lives.
What is Regenerative Therapy?
Dr. Aaron Potts: Regenerative therapy is actually a buzzword right now, but it’s been around for a while. How regenerative therapy works is that when in chronic pain, most people have degeneration or damage to connective tissue and that’s usually from tendons, ligaments or it can even be the joint surfaces as well.
What regenerative medicine does is we’re able to do injections that are natural substances into the areas of degeneration and help really trigger the body to heal itself again. We’re really giving the body a second chance at healing these chronic degenerative issues.
What Kind of Conditions and Ailments Does Regenerative Therapy Help With?
Dr. Aaron Potts: Really any kind of arthritis of any joint in the body. It can be arthritis in the spine as well, it can also help with treatments of tendon issues. So, like tendonitis or tendinopathy, even issues with lax ligaments. So, instability of the joints and things like that. It’s just basically dealing with the microscopic anatomy that’s causing the pain; it helps to re-stimulate that healing process again.
What Does Regenerate and Rejuvenate Mean to You and Your Clients?
Dr. Aaron Potts: For me being a doctor, I’m a teacher as well and an educator, and I feel like with every patient, they need to be well aware of all the treatment options for them and with conventional medicine, most people that are in pain have chronic musculoskeletal pain, they’re offered drugs, they’re offered surgeries and cortisone injections and things like that. There is a place for all of that, but with regenerative medicine, I’m giving them an alternative to those treatments. In my experience, it works quite well.
For me, it’s more about sharing this paradigm shift to the patients that aren’t even really aware of that and so from that and opening these patients’ eyes to it, you can tell that they have more energy and they have more hope with their situation. I really enjoy being able to help people and educate them about regenerative therapy.
Is Regenerative Therapy New or Has It Been Around for A While?
Dr. Aaron Potts: As I mentioned earlier, it’s actually been around for quite a while. Back in the 1950s, there was a doctor who had a lot of patients with chronic low back pain. As we know, the treatments for low back pain are just not that great. He was treating his patients with something called prolotherapy, which is an injection of dextrose, which is a sugar solution, into the back, and he was seeing great results with it. That was the beginning.
From there, platelet-rich plasma was introduced, which is basically a blood draw where we spin your blood, take the platelets out of the blood, and do the injections into those areas of degeneration. From there, we’ve moved on to stem cell therapy, which is using either your own stem cells, or it could be a tissue allograft product that comes from the placenta. Nowadays, people are a lot more knowledgeable about it than they were a long time ago, but it works great for chronic pain, and we’re seeing amazing results with it.
What is the Long-Term Vision for Nascent Health?
Harry Obsitos: We’re really excited about Nascent Health. This is our flagship clinic in Gilbert, Arizona and we really do have quite a vision for helping people get out of pain. We’re hoping that this is the first of many clinics. We do have expansion plans and don’t necessarily envision being a one-off where we’re just in Gilbert. We’d like to be all around the Western United States, helping people get out of pain.
Obviously, we can help anybody at any age, but when we see most of the degeneration in our clients happening is in their older years of life. We see a lot of our patients and clients in their 40s, 50s, 60s, 70s, and 80s. Being in Arizona here, we have a big snowbird population, we have a lot of retirees. It’s a good, natural start to beginning the brand here in Arizona.
We absolutely look to expand to other states and hopefully be a household name for people who are looking for alternatives to hard drugs, prescription medication, surgeries, and things that are commonplace now in our medical society.
