新年快乐 or Chúc Mừng Năm Mới!
This time of year, after the holidays, is my favorite because I love Lunar New Year and Valentine’s Day! Lunar New Year is one of my favorite holidays because of all the traditions, superstitions, and of course, red envelopes.
2023 is the year of the Rabbit, unless you’re Vietnamese then it’s the year of the Cat. This year is my sister’s year! Growing up, because I’m a Rat, we would always say that we fought along because we were Rat and Cat.
If you were born in the following year – 1939, 1951, 1963, 1975, 1987, 1999, 2011, or 2023, you’re a Rabbit! However, it goes by the Lunar calendar. Since this year started on January 22, 2023, if you were born on January 21, then you’re technically a Tiger.
The Rabbit is known for being peaceful, calm, and prosperous. Out of all the 12 animals, it’s said to be the luckiest animal. People who are born in the year of the Rabbit are typically reserved, gentle, and cautious. I know three Rabbits in my life, and I could see them fitting in these characteristics!

Your Zodiac Animal Year
It’s also said that if it’s your zodiac year, it’s your unluckiest year because you offend Tai Sui, the God of Age. I definitely believe this is true because 2020 was the year of the Rat and that’s when the pandemic happened!
I wish I took the opportunity in 2020 to share the Chinese zodiac folktale since the Rat is the first animal in the cycle, but perhaps I will share about it another year! In the meantime, you can read more about the zodiac animal race.
There’s also a manga and anime about the zodiac animals called Fruits Basket. This is how I got interested in learning the folktale of all the animals! Fruits Basket is so cute, and I watched the TV series at least 4 times when I was in middle school.
BRB – I will be rewatching Fruits Basket on Hulu in the next few weeks!
