Hi, everyone. Today, I’m here with Dr. Arvind Mahadevan, and we are at Lux Aesthetics. We’re going to be talking about SculpSure. Can you tell us a little bit more about yourself?
Dr. Arvind Mahadevan: Hi, my name is Dr. Arvind Mahadevan. I’m a family physician. I’ve been practicing for about 11 years now, and over the last few years, we’ve started doing obesity medicine. I’m also board certified in obesity medicine, and recently we’ve started adding aesthetics to our practice as well. I do a lot with diabetes, hypertension – and we try to see all patients of all ages and take care of everybody.
Can you tell us more about SculpSure?
Dr. Arvind Mahadevan: SculpSure or WarmSculpting is a form of a laser – a noninvasive therapy used for permanent fat destruction. It’s approved by the FDA to either treat the abdomen – which is either the upper or lower abdomen, the flanks – or the love handles as I think people often call them- and then the upper back, as well as the inner and outer thighs, and then lastly, the submental or beneath the chin.
Can you explain the process? What would a patient do when they are in the office?
Dr. Arvind Mahadevan: So the patients when they come in for a consultation, they are evaluated, and we try to determine if they’re appropriate to receive treatment. We go through to kind of identify what are target areas that they want treated and then decide which areas to focus on first and how many areas to focus [on], and move forward from there.
Who would be a good candidate for this treatment?
Dr. Arvind Mahadevan: It depends on the location. So, if we’re talking about the chin, let’s start at the top, that’s for anyone who has a BMI or body mass index of less than 43, which is almost everyone. Okay. Now, when we’re talking about the abdomen, you want a BMI of approximately less than about 32 because typically, you do two cycles of treatments. So, you separate them by four to six weeks, and you want to do the treatments and have a good result. [There’s] no point in doing it and not getting a good result. So, if someone has a BMI that’s much larger than that, they don’t get a good outcome. So, we tend to discourage that until they’ve lost the weight first.
If a patient has a BMI over 32, what would you say they should do?
Dr. Arvind Mahadevan: Well, I think it’s crucial for them to lose weight in a sort of healthy way. Within our Trident Health Center practice, we also have MD Weight Loss, which is our medical weight loss program. For our patients who go through that, we had patients lose anywhere from 30 to over 100 pounds. This is directed with a low calorie or sometimes very low calorie diet, and there’s monitor to make sure that they lose it safely. We kind of work with them on behavioral and lifestyle modification so that not only do they lose the weight, but that they keep it off, which is the ultimate goal because I mean, we want them to be healthier. Looking better is, of course, the icing on the cake, but the cake is you’re actually healthier and better. So, that’s how we do it.
What would you say the pros and cons of SculpSure is?
Dr. Arvind Mahadevan: I mean, in terms of pros, I think the biggest one is it’s not invasive. So, there’s no needles, there’s no scalpels, there’s nothing at all on that front. The treatment itself takes about 25 minutes. We often have working individuals come in during their lunch break, just take an extra long lunch. They come in, get their treatment, go back to work. So, it’s not something that you’re going to miss any work or school [for], and you can kind of continue with your regular life and not necessarily advertise that you went through a procedure. Pretty much everyone can do it except unless if they have some electrical hardware like a pacemaker or something, but other than that, anyone else can pretty much do it.
In terms of the cons, well, the cons [are] unfortunately, not everyone is an ideal patient. I mean, it would be great if anybody could come in, and they could be completely reformed through this device and through this technique, but you have to kind of identify the right person. I think from my perspective, the patients that have lost weights or generally fit who exercise well, but then they have those problem areas that they’re doing everything right, but there’s that one or two areas that no matter what they do, they can’t get, those are the ideal SculpSure patients, and they’re the ones with the best outcomes.
How many treatments would you need, or can you see results in one treatment?
Dr. Arvind Mahadevan: The treatment course is two treatments and they are split by four to six weeks based on the patient’s availability to do it, but they have to be at least four weeks apart. We try to keep it within six weeks for the second one. Can patients see some benefit after the first treatment? Yes, but it’s not as good as they’re going to get.
How does SculpSure differ from other treatments out there?
Dr. Arvind Mahadevan: Well, the main difference is that it’s not invasive. So, in terms of like, say liposuction or lipolysis, those are invasive procedures. There’s definite downtime that patients who go through them have to experience. From a cost perspective, SculpSure tends to be more economical than liposuction tends to be, but this does have the virtue of also being a permanent fat destruction. So, like in comparison versus, say CoolSculpting or WarmSculpture or WarmSculpting, it causes permanent destruction of fat cells. In the targeted areas, you get 24% destruction of the fat cells. Those cells, once they’re destroyed, are gone. The only way that the body can make more fat cells is the person has to have a substantial weight gain in order for the body to make more fat cells. So, once they’re destroyed, they’re gone. So, the effect is permanent.
What other services do you offer here?
Dr. Arvind Mahadevan: In addition to SculpSure, we also do some Botox injections for our patients. There are other things that are in the pipeline, but I don’t want to say those until we started, but those are the two things that we’ve got right now, and we’re hoping to continue to add more services for our patients.
Where can we find you?
Dr. Arvind Mahadevan: Our website is LuxAesthetics.net. We’re also on Instagram, and we also have an Instagram page for our weight loss program, MD Weight Loss AZ, so that has a lot of those before and after pictures. The website has the same thing, and patients are encouraged to call and request a free consultation, and we’re happy to go over things individually with people as they have questions.
